Staying Healthy While on the Road

Long hours on the road and access to a plethora of unhealthy food at truck stops can make it challenging to maintain a healthy lifestyle as a truck driver. If you want to improve your physical, mental, and emotional wellness as you drive, use the following tips to find ways to stay healthy.

Watch What You Eat

When you are driving in the middle of nowhere, it is much easier to find unhealthy fast food than it is to find something with actual sustenance. Paying attention to what you eat can help you avoid consuming unnecessary calories and harming your body. Try to pack snacks like nuts, fruit, vegetables, and lean protein that will keep you properly satiated as you drive. Make an effort to avoid fatty, processed foods that will do more harm than good to your system.

Stay Physically Active

There are plenty of ways you can stay active while on the road. Pack some free weights into your truck so you can do some strength training while you stop at a truck stop. Make an effort to get out of the truck and walk as often as you can. You might even want to find a local track and run some laps while you are taking a driving break. You should get at least 15 minutes of physical activity a day to keep your body functioning at its highest level.

Get Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep is essential for truck drivers and can prevent drowsy driving accidents. You should make an effort to get between seven and nine hours of sleep a night. If you are driving a long shift, you should take a 20-minute break every few hours to avoid getting too tired behind the wheel.
